Welcome to Normally-off computing

Normally-Off is a way of computing which aggressively powers off components of computer systems when they need not to operate. With new generation non-volatile memories that are both as fast as traditional memory technologies and able to keep its contents without power supply, very fine-grain power control is available. This in consequence helps enabling normally-off computing.
Normally-Off Computing Project, started in 2011, aims to realize normally-off computing in order to achieve higher performance per power for wide varieties of computing systems. This project is supported by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) and METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) of Japan. Toshiba Corporation, Renesas Electronics Corporation, ROHM Corporation, and the University of Tokyo are the members of this project.
